Summary

Douglas L. Jamerson Junior Elementary is a mid-sized school in St. Petersburg, FL, serving 536 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the Pinellas school district, which is ranked among the top districts in the state.

Jamerson stands out for its exceptional 3rd-grade performance, with 80% of students proficient in English Language Arts and 88% in math—well above district and state averages. However, the school faces a notable challenge: test scores drop significantly after 3rd grade, with 5th-grade proficiency falling to 59% in ELA and 55% in math. This pattern suggests a need for stronger support in upper elementary grades. On the positive side, Jamerson has a very low chronic absenteeism rate of just 13.3%, far below the district average of 30.6%, indicating strong student engagement and attendance habits. The school also demonstrates efficient use of resources, spending $13,440 per student while achieving better outcomes than nearby schools like Fairmount Park Elementary, which spends $19,550 per student but holds a 1-star rating.

Compared to its neighbors, Jamerson sits in a middle ground. It outperforms Melrose Elementary and Campbell Park Elementary, but lags behind Midtown Academy and Lakeview Fundamental Elementary, both 4-star schools with similar or lower poverty rates. Science is a relative weakness, with 5th-grade scores (62%) below the district average (70%). For parents, Jamerson offers a strong foundation in early grades and a positive attendance culture, but the school's declining trajectory in upper grades is an important factor to consider when evaluating long-term academic growth.

Open Quote I am a mom of 3 and I have moved around a bit when my kids were younger. They have attended a private school and another school in South Tampa before settling where we are now at Douglas Jamerson. In my opinion, this is the best school out of any of the other schools that they have attended! The magnet program focuses on math and engineering which are the top 2 subjects of jobs needed in this country. The teachers are intelligent and they truly care for the kids. My oldest daughter is now in middle school and getting straight "A"'s on her report card. I attribute her success to the foundation that was taught to her by the teachers and staff at Douglas Jamerson. Close Quote
