Summary

Oak Grove Middle School in Clearwater, FL, serves 724 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Pinellas district, which ranks in the top 25% of Florida districts. The school has shown a promising upward trend, climbing from a low point in 2022-2023 to its highest state ranking in years (38th percentile) for the 2025-2026 school year. This improvement is reflected in broad gains across subjects, such as 6th-grade English Language Arts proficiency rising from 30% to 53% and 8th-grade Science jumping from 29% to 48% over the same period.

A standout strength is Oak Grove's exceptional performance in Algebra 1, where 76% of students were proficient in 2025-2026—significantly higher than the district (64%) and state (63%) averages. This success has been consistent for four years, outperforming nearby schools like Seminole Middle School and Palm Harbor Middle School. However, this masks a critical weakness: only 16% of 7th graders were proficient in grade-level math, far below the state average of 53%. This "bimodal" pattern suggests that while advanced students thrive, the majority of on-level students struggle, pointing to a need for stronger core math instruction.

The most significant red flag is chronic absenteeism, which rose to 35.6% in 2023-2024—higher than the district (30.6%), state (31.4%), and every nearby school. For comparison, Clearwater Fundamental Middle School, just 2.3 miles away, has a chronic absenteeism rate of only 5.8%. This attendance crisis likely undermines academic progress, especially in subjects like 7th-grade math and 8th-grade science. While Oak Grove is on a recovery path, addressing absenteeism is critical to sustaining its recent gains and closing the gap with higher-performing peers.

Open Quote Do Not be fooled, This school is awful. The staff are incredibly rude, they could not care less about the students or their academic success. one star is generous. its a cesspool of disrespectful children and teachers battling it out with one another. these teachers/principles will lie to your face without batting an eye. Your Child will almost certainly fail at this school or barely pass the year, academically and socially Close Quote
