Summary

Melaleuca Elementary School in West Palm Beach, FL, serves 664 students in grades K-5 within the Palm Beach School District, and is located in a community where about two-thirds of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Melaleuca is in the midst of a remarkable academic turnaround, especially in math. After ranking in the bottom 20th percentile of Florida elementary schools for years, the school jumped to the 29th percentile in 2025-2026—its highest ranking since 2019. The most dramatic improvement is in 3rd-grade math, where proficiency more than doubled from 34% to 70% in just two years. This rate of improvement is the most aggressive among nearby schools like Cholee Lake Elementary School and Berkshire Elementary School, which saw much more modest gains. Additionally, Melaleuca’s 6th-grade math scores are an outlier, with 91% of students proficient—far exceeding district and state averages. However, the school still faces challenges: 5th-grade science proficiency (51%) lags behind the district and state (both 60%), and is significantly lower than nearby Forest Hill Elementary School (78%) and Wynnebrook Elementary School (66%).

The biggest barrier to sustained success is chronic absenteeism. Melaleuca’s rate of 33.5% is alarmingly high, far worse than higher-performing neighbors like Everglades Elementary School (17.4%) and Pine Jog Elementary School (25.8%). While the school spends more per student ($15,075) than many nearby schools, including Everglades ($12,936), this funding hasn’t yet translated into consistent high performance across all subjects. Melaleuca’s recent math gains are impressive, but to close the gap with schools like Everglades—which achieves top-quartile rankings with lower poverty and absenteeism—the school must aggressively tackle its attendance crisis and replicate its math success in other subjects.
