Summary

Cypress Creek High in Orlando, FL, is a large comprehensive public high school serving over 3,100 students in grades 9-12 within the Orange school district. The school presents a striking paradox: it has an extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 56.4%—nearly double the district average—yet boasts a remarkable graduation rate of 96.6%, which consistently exceeds both district and state averages. This suggests that while many students are frequently absent, the school may have robust credit recovery programs or flexible pathways that help enrolled students ultimately earn their diplomas.

However, this high graduation rate contrasts with significant academic challenges, particularly in math. Only 34% of students are proficient in Algebra 1, compared to 63% district and state averages, and 51% in Geometry versus 59% district and 56% state. This math deficit is a key driver of the school's lower overall state ranking and is more severe than at nearby Freedom High, where 61% of students are proficient in Algebra 1. On a positive note, test scores have shown a slight upward trend in recent years, with Algebra 1 proficiency rising from 16% to 34% and 9th-grade ELA from 40% to 56% over two years, indicating that recent interventions may be starting to yield results.

When compared to nearby schools, Cypress Creek's challenges stand out. Its chronic absenteeism rate is dramatically higher than that of high-performing magnet schools like Professional & Technical High School (14.6%) and Osceola County School For The Arts (9.0%), though these are selective-admission schools serving different student populations. The school also operates with slightly lower per-student spending ($8,953) than these high-performing peers ($10,436-$11,085) and even nearby Freedom High ($9,332). For parents, Cypress Creek offers a high graduation rate and improving test scores, but the extremely high absenteeism and math proficiency gaps are important factors to consider when evaluating the school's overall academic environment.

Open Quote The faculty at this school are not professional at all. They are rude to students and have no tact when it comes to dealing with some students. They instigate a response to get students to the point of insubordination and then claim they are problem children. There is no communication among the staff. Faculty tell students untruths, lie, and believe themselves to be above the rules. Look at the stats...... THEY DO NOT LIE! Close Quote
