Summary

Addie R. Lewis School in Valparaiso, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 653 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade within the highly-ranked Okaloosa School District.

This school offers a unique advantage: it is one of only two schools in the area that keeps students through 8th grade, providing a continuous educational experience and a strong middle school culture. The middle school program is a standout, with exceptional performance in advanced courses. In the most recent school year, Addie R. Lewis achieved a remarkable 100% proficiency rate in Geometry and a 97% proficiency rate in Civics—scores that far exceed both district and state averages. The school also benefits from a lower student-teacher ratio of 14.5 and higher per-student spending ($13,780) compared to nearby high-performing schools like Bluewater Elementary ($9,256) and James E. Plew Elementary ($9,100).

However, the school presents a tale of two programs. While its middle school grades consistently outperform district averages in English Language Arts and Math, its elementary grades (3-5) generally lag behind. For instance, 3rd-grade Math proficiency is just 45%, compared to 71% district-wide. This is a stark contrast to its closest peer, Lula J. Edge Elementary School, which outperforms Addie R. Lewis in nearly every elementary subject despite being a PK-5 school. Additionally, chronic absenteeism (17.5%) is a persistent challenge, roughly double the rate of several neighboring schools. While the school has a history of solid performance, its state rankings have been volatile, dropping from a peak in 2018-2019 and not yet fully recovering. For parents, Addie R. Lewis offers a strong middle school experience with advanced coursework, but the elementary program has clear room for growth.
