Summary

Horace O'Bryant School in Key West, FL, is a large public school serving 1,011 students in grades PK through 8, and it is the largest school in the immediate Key West area, though it faces significant academic challenges compared to nearby schools.

Horace O'Bryant has seen a notable decline in its state ranking, dropping from a 3-star rating in 2016-2017 to a 1-star rating in the 2025-2026 school year, placing it in the bottom 20% of Florida schools. This is a stark contrast to nearby Sigsbee Charter School, which consistently earns a 4-star rating and outperforms Horace O'Bryant by 30-40 percentage points in most subjects. A critical red flag is a dramatic drop in proficiency between 3rd and 4th grade: 3rd graders score 58% proficient in ELA and 68% in math, but by 4th grade, those scores plummet to 20% and 25%, respectively—a pattern that has persisted for three years. Additionally, the school has a high chronic absenteeism rate of 21.1%, higher than Sigsbee Charter (14.7%) and nearby Gerald Adams Elementary School (18.4%).

Interestingly, Horace O'Bryant shows a paradox: students in advanced math courses like Algebra 1 and Geometry achieve near-perfect proficiency (98% and 100%), far exceeding district and state averages, while the majority of students struggle with grade-level standards. This suggests a "two-tiered" system where a small group excels, but most students are left behind. The school spends $17,445 per student, higher than Sigsbee Charter ($16,555), yet results are low, raising questions about resource allocation. The Monroe district ranks 19th out of 70 in Florida, but Horace O'Bryant's performance is a significant outlier, highlighting the need for targeted interventions, especially in 4th-grade instruction and addressing chronic absenteeism.
