Summary

Tara Elementary School in Bradenton, FL, is a public school serving 582 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Manatee County School District, and it has established itself as a high-performing institution with a remarkable story of improvement.

What truly sets Tara Elementary apart is its exceptional performance in mathematics, particularly in 4th grade, where 89% of students are proficient—a rate that is 25 percentage points higher than the district average and the highest among all nearby schools. This strength in math is consistent across all grades, with 3rd and 5th graders also scoring well above state averages. The school achieves these results despite serving a moderately diverse population where just over half of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For context, Tara outperforms Freedom Elementary School in every subject and grade level, even though Freedom has a lower percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Similarly, Tara achieves comparable or better test scores than B.D. Gullett Elementary School, which has a much lower poverty rate. The contrast with Manatee Charter School is especially striking: both schools have nearly identical free/reduced lunch rates, yet Tara’s 4th-grade math proficiency is 42 points higher, demonstrating that a school’s socioeconomic makeup does not predetermine its outcomes.

Another key strength is Tara’s low chronic absenteeism rate of 14.8%, which is less than half the district and state averages and the lowest among nearby schools with comparable data. This metric has improved dramatically from 26.7% just a few years ago, suggesting effective interventions. The school’s ranking history tells a compelling story of turnaround: from a solid 3-star school in the mid-60th percentile six years ago, Tara has leaped to a consistent 4-star rating, even achieving a 5-star ranking in 2022-2023. This sustained improvement points to systemic changes in curriculum, instruction, or school culture that have had a lasting positive impact, making Tara a standout choice for families in the Bradenton area.

Open Quote As parents of students at Tara we have been very pleased with their progress there and also with the teachers they have had through their experiences. We have also had foster children attending there and they have always had a good experience at the school and earned good grades.
Dr. Foust was always a fair, kind principal who had the best interest of the children in mind. We look forward to getting to know our new principal this coming year, Steve Royce.
Thank you Tara teachers and all the people who work at Tara. Close Quote
