Summary

Manatee Charter School in Bradenton, FL, serves 619 students in grades K-8 within the Manatee district, a school that presents a unique "tale of two schools" with exceptional performance in advanced high school courses but significant struggles in overall grade-level academics.

This school has a striking split personality. While most students perform below district and state averages in standard subjects like English and math, those taking advanced End-of-Course (EOC) exams in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Biology 1 consistently outperform the district by wide margins—for example, 83% proficiency in Algebra 1 versus 58% district-wide in 2025-2026. This suggests a strong program for advanced learners, but it doesn't translate to the broader student body. The most critical issue is chronic absenteeism, which reached 39.1% in 2023-2024—over three times higher than nearby Louise R Johnson K-8 School Of International Studies (12.6%) and well above the state average (31.4%). This absenteeism crisis is likely a primary driver of the school's low overall performance, which has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Florida elementary schools.

There are some bright spots and notable contrasts. Fifth-grade science has shown impressive improvement, jumping from 9% proficiency in 2022-2023 to 55% in 2025-2026, now close to the state average. However, 8th-grade science has declined sharply to just 28% proficiency, far below the district's 50%. The school also operates with a leaner budget ($9,323 per student) compared to most nearby public schools, though it's similar to the high-performing William Monroe Rowlett Academy For Arts And Communication ($10,831). Compared to another local charter, Visible Men Academy, which is much smaller (49 students) with higher per-pupil spending ($50,055), Manatee Charter shows that charter school outcomes vary widely based on focus and resources.

Open Quote The bullying at this school is a real problem. My daughter learned nothing there. I ended up pulling her out because she was constantly coming home in tears. The school staff even referred to her as baby. When I mentioned this to them they called me a liar. Close Quote
