Summary

Leon High School is a large, traditional public high school in downtown Tallahassee, FL, serving 1,793 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Leon district.

Leon High School has experienced a significant and sustained decline in its state ranking over the past five years, dropping from the 83rd percentile in 2017 to the 57th percentile in 2026. The most critical issue driving this decline is an alarmingly high chronic absenteeism rate of 47.6% (2023-2024), which is well above the district average of 36.8% and the state average of 31.4%. This attendance crisis has directly impacted the school's graduation rate, which has fallen from a high of 94.7% in 2020-2021 to 84.2% (2024-2025)—now below the state average of 92.2% and the lowest among major traditional high schools in the area, including Lincoln High School (92.7%) and James Rickards High School (91.9%). The school shows a stark contrast in academic performance: it excels in English Language Arts (67% of 9th graders proficient vs. 60% state average) but struggles significantly in mathematics, with only 37% of students proficient in Algebra 1 compared to 63% statewide—a 26-percentage-point gap.

Interestingly, Sail, a smaller magnet school located just 2.6 miles away with a similar demographic profile, achieves vastly different results: a 97.8% graduation rate, a 40.6% absenteeism rate, and a ranking in the 75th percentile. This comparison suggests that school-level factors like culture and student engagement are more critical to success than district policies alone. Leon's per-student spending ($8,481) is in the middle of the pack for the district, indicating that funding is not the primary issue. The school's challenges are solvable but require focused intervention to improve attendance, student engagement, and math instruction.

Open Quote My son, who graduated in 2023, had a wonderful experience at Leon! The teachers are excellent and the school offers many AP courses and award-winning extracurricular activities. My son played football for 4 years (on the new turf field with new weightlifting equipment), was in Culinary for 4 years (he cooks dinner for us now!) and took many AP and Honors classes. My husband attended Leon, is in the Leon Lions Football Hall of Fame and has a strong and expansive community network thanks to Leon. Leon also has an active alumni community that offers scholarships for students. Leon is less than a mile from the State Capitol of Florida and proud of its traditions and history as Florida’s oldest continually accredited high school, founded in 1871 just 26 years after Florida became a state! Open Quote We are from the Netherlands and our son has started in the 10th grade. From day one he loved the school and so do we. The Leon High School offers different levels of the courses and for my son getting a 5 on the FCAT the choice for AP courses is the best one. The teachers here are very dedicated and we love the management Good job Mr. Hanna and team!! Close Quote
