Summary

Harns Marsh Middle School in Lehigh Acres, FL, serves 905 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Lee district, a community where nearly 59% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school presents a fascinating contrast: it has an exceptionally strong advanced math program that dramatically outperforms nearby schools. For example, 90% of students passed Algebra 1 End-of-Course exams, compared to just 56% district-wide, and 95% passed Geometry versus 48% in the district. However, the school struggles significantly with grade-level math, particularly in 7th grade where only 18% of students are proficient—less than half the state average of 53%. This creates a "tale of two math programs," where a small group of high-performing students excels in advanced courses while many others struggle with core concepts. The school also faces a critical challenge with chronic absenteeism, which at 40.1% is notably higher than nearby schools like Three Oaks Middle School (22.4%) and Varsity Lakes Middle School (29.9%).

Despite spending more per student ($12,277) than higher-performing peers like Three Oaks ($9,433), the school's overall performance remains low, ranking in the bottom 30th percentile of Florida middle schools. There is a glimmer of hope in 8th grade, where students outperform the district in math and science, suggesting some programs may be effective by that grade level. Civics is a consistent weakness, with scores below state averages. The school recently earned a 2-star rating, a slight improvement from previous 1-star ratings, but the core issues of absenteeism and foundational skill gaps remain significant barriers to progress.

Open Quote I've been heavily involved as a parent with the school the last four years. The transformation with the new principal has been noteworthy. She has put a strong leadership team in place and got rid of some of the less impactful teachers and has raised the level of rigor across the school. The gifted/honor's teachers here are TOP NOTCH. The schools test score don't tell the whole story. Based on it's location, this school has an inordinate number of students who have been moved along in grades (due to age), that negatively pull down the scores. If you have a gifted child, they will be in ALL advanced classes, unlike some of the "quote unquote" gifted schools in the East Zone. Close Quote

Open Quote I have been a member of the faculty at HMMS for a few years. This school is building a great community. Although there is room for growth, we are growing our student support systems to be used by all teachers, administration, and staff. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers are vested in the success of the students. The school grade increased 2 grades in one year and most benchmarks reflect greater gains and/or higher schools than District average. Fights and behavior issues are less than found in most if not all other East Zone Lee District schools.
Biggest downfall is communication needs improvement. Close Quote
