Summary

Hillsborough Academy Of Math And Science is a K-8 charter school in Tampa, FL, serving 819 students within the Hillsborough district. This school stands out for its exceptional performance in advanced coursework, with proficiency rates in Algebra 1 (95%), Geometry (89%), and Biology 1 (89%) far exceeding both district and state averages. It also boasts remarkably low chronic absenteeism at 12.3%, less than half the district rate of 31.3%, suggesting strong student engagement and family involvement.

However, the school shows a "Jekyll and Hyde" pattern in math. While 7th and 8th graders achieve outstanding scores on the standard FAST Math exam (74% and 80% respectively, compared to district averages of 39% and 62%), performance in elementary grades (3rd-6th) is only on par with district averages. A notable weakness is elementary and middle school science, where 5th grade proficiency (51%) falls below the district (55%) and state (60%) averages, and 8th grade science (47%) also lags behind. This contrasts sharply with nearby Deer Park Elementary School (81% in 5th grade science) and Westchase Elementary School (79%).

Compared to the other K-8 charter in the area, Henderson Hammock Charter School, Hillsborough Academy dramatically outperforms it in nearly every subject, especially in middle school math (80% vs. 56% in 8th grade). The school operates with lower per-student spending ($8,926) than nearby traditional schools like Bellamy Elementary ($13,270), but maintains a higher student-teacher ratio (22.7:1). While it has been a consistent 3-star school for nearly a decade, it has not reached the top-tier status of nearby Westchase Elementary (5-star) or Deer Park Elementary (4-star). For families seeking a rigorous academic path with advanced course offerings in a K-8 setting, this school offers strong math and science preparation, though elementary science and class sizes are areas to consider.

Open Quote We have attended HAMS from the very first year and have been very happy with the environment of the school and the education our sons are receiving! The curriculum is science focused with a lot of hands on learning that is unusual for elementary students. The administration, support staff and the teachers are supportive, communicative with the parents and run a great school! The after care program is equally amazing with structured, age appropriate activities. This after care program is not the usual free-for-all like most 'host' programs. We could not be happier we chose HAMS for our children. Close Quote
