Summary

Westshore Elementary School is a small, PK-5 public school in Tampa, FL, serving 259 students within the Hillsborough district, and it is currently facing significant challenges that set it apart from many nearby schools.

Westshore has experienced a steep academic decline, dropping from the 50th percentile statewide in 2021-2022 to the 10th percentile in 2025-2026, earning a 0-star rating. This is a stark contrast to high-performing neighbors like Mabry Elementary School, Grady Elementary School, and Roosevelt Elementary School, which consistently score in the 90th+ percentile. For example, only 24% of Westshore's 3rd graders were proficient in math in 2025-2026, compared to 95% at Mabry and 98% at Grady. The school also struggles with a chronic absenteeism rate of 33.5%, nearly six times higher than Mabry's 5.7% and Grady's 9.3%. While Westshore spends $16,427 per student—significantly more than these high-performing schools—it is not seeing a return on that investment in student outcomes.

Interestingly, a comparison with Lanier Elementary School, located just over a mile away, shows that better results are possible with a similar student population. Lanier, which has a comparable size and percentage of students eligible for free/reduced lunch, ranks in the 58th percentile (3 stars) and has a lower chronic absenteeism rate of 29.4%. This suggests that Westshore's struggles are not solely due to its demographics, but also to school-level factors like leadership and instruction. The school's leadership must urgently address the root causes of its decline, particularly by improving math instruction and tackling the absenteeism crisis, to reverse this downward trend.

Open Quote Westshore was 4th in the district for writing 2013-2014 school year. They are currently an A school. My son achieved a 5 in Math and Reading on his FCAT. He is bright but the hard work of his teacher shined in his test scores. He has been at Westshore for 2 full school years. His baby sister will enter Kindergarten this year. I couldn't be happier with my CHOICE to place my children at Westshore. I believe that Westshore is the gem of South Tampa. It has a huge free and reduced lunch population but still continues to have the highest expectations for academics and behaviors you will find. Linda Drawdy's leadership is certainly something that should be studied and duplicated by others in the district. Close Quote

Open Quote 3 out of 4 kindergarten teachers delivered babies w/i weeks of each other. They were replaced with teachers who had little or no teaching experience. This shows extremely poor planning by administrators! Close Quote

Open Quote Amazing school! It is close knit and has a family feel. Everyone knows you and your child from the teachers to the principle. Close Quote
