Summary

Weeki Wachee High School is a large public high school in Weeki Wachee, FL, serving 1,437 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Hernando County School District.

The most critical issue for parents to understand is the school's severe and persistent chronic absenteeism crisis. In the 2023-2024 school year, nearly half of all students (48.9%) were chronically absent, which is far above the state average of 31.4% and significantly higher than nearby Nature Coast Technical High (33.7%). This absenteeism problem is likely a major driver of the school's consistently low math scores, with only 35% of students proficient in Algebra 1 compared to the state average of 63%. However, the school shows a surprising strength in other subjects, with 70% of students proficient in Biology and 68% in U.S. History, suggesting that instructional quality is not uniformly low. Despite these academic challenges, Weeki Wachee boasts a strong graduation rate of 95.6%, exceeding both the district and state averages and matching top-performing peers like Lecanto High School (95.6%).

There are some positive signs of improvement. The school's state ranking jumped from the 33rd percentile in 2024-2025 to the 42nd percentile in 2025-2026, and most test scores improved over that same period. The school serves a moderately high-needs population, with 47.6% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. For context, Nature Coast Technical High serves a lower-needs population (33.8%) and outperforms Weeki Wachee in nearly every subject, highlighting the potential impact of socioeconomic factors and school culture. The key question for parents is whether the school can sustain its recent upward trajectory and accelerate improvement in math and attendance, especially given the paradox of high graduation rates alongside low academic proficiency.

Open Quote We have only been here a year and found the Art Department, particularly Ms. Cambell an inspiration to her students. She focuses on what the students enjoy and then talks to them about achieving their goals. Our daughter has two pieces hanging because of Ms. Cambell's support. One in the District Office at Hernando County schools, and the other at the Salvador Dali Museum in Tampa. Bravo!!! Close Quote
