Summary

Deltona Elementary School in Spring Hill, FL, serves 854 students in grades PK-5 within the Hernando district, and is currently facing significant challenges, including a 1-star rating and a steep decline from its previous 3-star performance.

The most pressing issue at Deltona is a chronic absenteeism crisis, with 44.6% of students missing substantial school time—the highest rate among nearby elementary schools. For comparison, Gulf Coast Elementary School has a rate of just 15.4%, and the high-performing Challenger K-8 School Of Science And Math sits at 14.3%. This absenteeism is likely a key driver of the school's academic struggles, as seen in 5th-grade math, where only 36% of students are proficient—the lowest score among all nearby schools and well below the state average of 62%. Even schools with similar poverty levels, like Westside Elementary School, outperform Deltona in this subject (52% proficiency).

Despite these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope in 4th-grade English Language Arts (ELA), where 54% of students are proficient, close to the district average of 57%. This suggests effective instruction in some areas that could be replicated. However, the school spends $11,705 per student—more than higher-performing peers like Suncoast Elementary School ($10,431) and Spring Hill Elementary School ($10,644)—indicating that funding alone isn't the issue. The most urgent priority for Deltona must be a comprehensive strategy to improve attendance, as this foundational problem is undermining all academic efforts.

Open Quote New P and VP at the school a couple of years ago seem to be helping this school become a great learning environment. For the most part, you can tell the teachers and staff care for the children. Could use some improvement, but the last "A" school my child attended needed lots of improvement. My kids are happy at the school and they feel welcome and seem to be doing well academically. Close Quote
