Summary

Suncoast Elementary School in Spring Hill, FL, is a PK-5 public school serving 967 students in the Hernando County School District, and it has become a standout success story in the area. Over the past decade, the school has transformed from a low-performing institution to a 4-star school ranked in the 74th percentile statewide, a remarkable turnaround that sets it apart from many nearby schools. This is especially impressive given that Suncoast serves a predominantly low-to-middle-income population, with 62% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, yet it significantly outperforms schools with similar demographics, such as Spring Hill Elementary (ranked 29th percentile) and John D. Floyd Elementary (ranked 46th percentile).

One of the school's biggest strengths is its exceptional early-grade performance, particularly in 3rd-grade math, where 82% of students were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—far exceeding the district (65%) and state (66%) averages. This proficiency rate rivals top-performing magnet schools like Challenger K-8 School Of Science And Math (88%) and Chocachatti Elementary (80%), and it dramatically outpaces struggling schools like Deltona Elementary (40%). Suncoast also consistently beats the Hernando district average across nearly every subject and grade level, and it even outperforms schools in the higher-ranked Pasco district, such as Shady Hills Elementary and Dr. Mary Giella Elementary.

However, there are areas for growth. While Suncoast excels in early grades, there is a noticeable decline in 5th-grade proficiency, with math dropping 21 points from 3rd grade (82% to 61%) and ELA also falling. Additionally, the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 35.5% is better than the district average (40.8%) but much higher than top performers like Challenger K-8 (14.3%). Notably, Suncoast achieves these results with the lowest per-student spending ($10,431) among nearby schools, suggesting efficient resource use rather than high funding drives its success. For parents, Suncoast offers a strong, upward-trending school that provides excellent early education, though it may need to focus on maintaining those gains through 5th grade.

Open Quote Horrible school that shelters and protects bullies while punishing the victims for reporting it, because "it's wrong to be a tattletale". Make no mistake, the vast majority of teachers here don't care about your child or their safety. As a former student, when my mother confronted the school and told them that I would be learning how to defend myself since they don't want to do anything about it, they were enraged and told us that I wasn't ALLOWED to defend myself. Disgusting. The school deserves to be closed down, and all teachers sheltering the bullies deserve to never teach again. Worst years of my childhood for sure.
To make an already bad problem worse, they absolutely HATE if your child is ahead of the game in terms of curriculum. Can you believe that in second grade, my mother was told to stop giving me educational material outside of school because I was "TOO SMART"? I can't make this up. A teacher actually told a parent of a student to remove extra education from their child's life, because they were TOO SMART.
I guess that's why their overall scores are so bad these days. It's been years and they clearly haven't changed. Close Quote
