Summary

San Jose Prep is a public charter school in Jacksonville, FL, serving 594 students in grades 6 through 12 within the Duval school district. The school faces significant challenges, most notably a chronic absenteeism rate of 60.5% in the 2023-2024 school year—nearly double the state average and dramatically higher than nearby schools like Samuel W. Wolfson High School (17.5%) and Douglas Anderson School Of The Arts (26.3%). This attendance crisis is directly linked to consistently low test scores across all subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates far below district and state averages. For example, only 11% of 8th graders were proficient in science, compared to 52% statewide, and just 13% were proficient in ELA versus 60% statewide.

Despite these academic struggles, San Jose Prep boasts an exceptionally high graduation rate of 98.4%, rivaling top-performing schools like Wolfson (100%) and River City Science Academy (100%). This stark contrast raises important questions about the rigor of the school's coursework and whether graduates are truly prepared for college or careers. The school's state ranking has also declined sharply, dropping from the 49th percentile in 2018-2019 to the 20th percentile in 2025-2026, while nearby schools like Wolfson have risen to the 99th percentile. Interestingly, San Jose Prep's per-student spending ($8,399) is similar to that of higher-performing schools like Atlantic Coast High School ($8,375), suggesting that funding alone is not the root cause of its challenges.

Compared to other charter schools in the area, San Jose Prep's performance is notably different. River City Science Academy, another Duval charter, is a 5-star school with high test scores and low absenteeism (47.0%), showing that charter status does not determine success. The school's struggles stand in stark contrast to its high-performing neighbors just miles away, underscoring that local leadership and school culture are key drivers of outcomes. For parents, the most critical takeaway is that San Jose Prep's high graduation rate may mask deeper issues with academic preparedness, and the school's absenteeism crisis is its most pressing challenge to address.

Open Quote They run this school like a prison. Online school that can't keep their Wi-Fi working. Rude and sarcastic to the children but expect them to be respectful. No janitors. Can't get a human on the phone. They lock the door to the bathroom doing class changes but only give five bathroom passes a quarter and will not let you Go to the bathroom even with a female emergency. Horrible School absolutely failing their children. Don't send your kids here Close Quote
