Summary

Imater Academy is a K-5 elementary school in Hialeah, FL, serving 590 students as part of the Miami-Dade school district, and it stands out as a relative bright spot in a high-poverty area where over 91% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

One of the most notable features of Imater Academy is its strong performance in 4th grade English Language Arts (ELA), where 67% of students were proficient in the most recent testing year—above both the state average of 60% and the district average of 64%. This is a significant achievement given the school's high poverty rate. However, the school faces a sharp drop-off in 5th grade, with only 44% proficient in math (compared to 67% district-wide) and 34% in science (versus 59% district-wide). This pattern suggests a systemic challenge in upper elementary grades. Additionally, chronic absenteeism is high at 29.1%, which is likely a contributing factor to academic struggles. Despite these issues, Imater outperforms nearby schools with similar demographics, such as Brightview Preparatory Academy and James H. Bright Elementary/J.W. Johnson Elementary, both of which rank significantly lower in state assessments.

Imater Academy also demonstrates efficiency with its resources, spending $11,144 per student—less than many nearby peers like Hialeah Elementary ($12,831) or Mae M. Walters Elementary ($14,037)—yet achieving a mid-tier state ranking. However, the school experienced a concerning 17-percentile-point drop in its state rank in the most recent year, falling to the 39th percentile, driven largely by declines in 5th-grade math and science. This recent dip warrants attention, but the school's consistent 4th-grade success and relative strength compared to immediate neighbors make it a noteworthy option for families in the area.

Open Quote This school is horrible. So many uncertified teachers. Students not receiving services that they are suppose to receive. The administration team has no idea what is going on as they have little to no observations of their teachers. School looks one way on paper but in reality is a nightmare. All good teachers leave. When a school has bad teacher turn around you know something is wrong. Beware! Close Quote
