Summary

Homestead Senior High School is a large, traditional public high school in Homestead, FL, serving 2,323 students in grades 9-12 within the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district, where over two-thirds of students come from low-income households.

The most striking feature of Homestead Senior High is its exceptional graduation rate of 98.6%, which rivals top-performing magnet schools like Medical Academy For Science And Technology (M.A.S.T.) @ Hom (98.7%) and Center For International Education A Cambridge Associate School (100%). However, this success in graduating students is not matched by academic proficiency, as test scores in Algebra 1 (33%) and 9th-grade ELA (39%) are roughly half the district average and significantly below those same high-performing schools. The school also faces a severe chronic absenteeism rate of 47%, nearly double the district average, which is a major contributor to the low test scores. Additionally, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 22.1:1 and being the largest school in the area, the learning environment can feel less personalized compared to smaller nearby schools like Keys Gate Charter High School (763 students).

Despite these challenges, the data reveals a story of consistent improvement. The school's state ranking has climbed from the 19th percentile to the 30th percentile over the past decade, and test scores are trending upward—Algebra 1 proficiency rose from 25% to 33% in recent years. This positive trajectory, combined with the already high graduation rate, suggests that recent initiatives are having a tangible impact. Interestingly, the school's per-student spending of $12,106 is higher than many nearby charter schools and comparable to elite magnets, indicating that the challenges are more tied to socioeconomic factors and the scale of the school than to a lack of funding.
