Summary

Hialeah Senior High School is a large traditional public high school in Hialeah, FL, serving 1,711 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Miami-Dade district, where 60% of students come from low-income families.

The most striking feature of Hialeah Senior High is its graduation rate paradox. The school boasts an exceptional 98.9% graduation rate for 2024-2025, the highest among nearby large high schools and well above the district average of 93.1%. However, this success contrasts sharply with its academic performance. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Florida high schools for the past decade, earning a 1-star rating. Only 26% of students were proficient in Algebra 1, compared to the district average of 69%. This is the lowest proficiency rate among comparable schools, tied with Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High. The school also faces a chronic absenteeism crisis, with 50% of students chronically absent in 2023-2024—nearly double the district average and the second-highest rate in the area.

Comparing Hialeah Senior High to William H. Turner Technical Arts High School, just 2.9 miles away, reveals that these challenges are not solely due to student demographics. Both schools have similar free/reduced lunch rates (60% vs. 58%), yet Turner Tech has a 4-star rating, 65% Algebra 1 proficiency, and a chronic absenteeism rate of just 27.2%. This suggests that school culture and student engagement are key factors. There is a glimmer of hope: 62% of Hialeah Senior High students were proficient in US History, much closer to the state average of 74%, indicating that improvement is possible in certain subjects. The school's primary challenge is clearly attendance, and addressing this crisis would likely unlock significant academic gains.
