Summary

Silver Lakes Elementary School in Miramar, FL, is a small elementary school serving 327 students in grades PK-5 within the Broward district, and it has historically been a strong performer but recently experienced a sharp and concerning decline in its state ranking.

One of the most striking features of Silver Lakes is its exceptionally high spending per student—$21,921 per year—which is dramatically more than nearby schools like Coral Cove Elementary ($15,748) and Somerset Academy ($8,251). Despite this investment, the school’s academic performance has not kept pace. After ranking in the 86th percentile just two years ago, Silver Lakes dropped to the 46th percentile in the most recent data, a decline of over 890 places in a single year. This is a much steeper drop than any neighboring school experienced. The school does offer smaller class sizes with a student-teacher ratio of 14.5:1, which is lower than many local public schools, but this advantage hasn’t translated into consistent test scores. Notably, 4th-grade proficiency rates in both ELA and math are significantly lower than in 3rd and 5th grades, a pattern not seen at nearby schools like Sunset Lakes Elementary.

Chronic absenteeism is another area of concern. While Silver Lakes’ rate of 24% is better than the district average, it is the highest among its immediate neighbors, including Panther Run Elementary (21.0%) and The Pembroke Pines Florida (14.1%). Given the school’s small size, this means nearly a quarter of students are chronically absent, which can disrupt learning for everyone. When compared to its closest rival, Sunset Lakes Elementary—which has a similar demographic profile but larger enrollment and lower spending—Silver Lakes has historically underperformed in state rankings. This suggests that the school’s high resources are not yielding a competitive academic advantage, making it important for parents to ask questions about how funds are being used and what steps are being taken to reverse the recent decline.

Open Quote My daughter is now in 5th grade and has been going since Kindergarten... I don't agree with everything in the school nor have I loved all of her teachers but will say that they are willing to listen to you and the Principal is always accessible! I felt I belonged the very first year... the staff will take the time to know you and greet you and if you ever have a doubt or concern, they are there to listen! Close Quote

Open Quote My son was a student since Kindergarten to 2nd grade. The education focuses in the lowest grade students; therefore they do not care about the kids in the average and above average level. For example, the 2nd grade math level was a review of the first grade math course and multiplication and division were not part of the 2nd grade curriculum. My son came back at the end of the school year with all his books with less than 50% completed and his teacher never assigned any single homework during the year (2012-2013).
The principal never replies e-mails, letters, phone calls or any request for meetings or questions.
I will never recommend this school to any kid in the average or above average level. Close Quote
