Summary

Tradewinds Elementary School in Coconut Creek, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 919 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Broward County Public School District. This school stands out for its strong and consistent math performance, with 5th graders achieving a 74% proficiency rate in the 2025-2026 school year—well above both the district (69%) and state (62%) averages. However, it faces a notable challenge in 4th-grade English Language Arts (ELA), where only 56% of students were proficient, lagging behind the district (65%) and state (60%) averages for three consecutive years. This "4th-grade slump" suggests a potential curriculum gap or transition issue that parents may want to discuss with teachers.

When compared to nearby schools, Tradewinds offers a solid middle-ground option. Just 1.7 miles away, the high-performing Riverglades Elementary School boasts a 5-star rating and 91% proficiency in 3rd-grade ELA, but it serves a wealthier population with only 13.3% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. In contrast, Quiet Waters Elementary School (2.3 miles away) is a 2-star school with lower performance and higher poverty rates. Tradewinds sits between these extremes, achieving reasonable results with a mid-range budget of $13,004 per student—less than the $18,431 spent at Coral Sunset Elementary School in the Palm Beach district, which doesn't guarantee better outcomes.

A key concern for parents is the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 33.0% in 2023-2024, which is notably higher than nearby Park Springs Elementary School (20.0%) and Riverglades (18.3%). This rate has remained stubbornly high even as the percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch dropped dramatically from nearly 60% to 34% over two years, suggesting the absenteeism issue may be cultural or tied to specific student groups rather than economic factors. On a positive note, 5th-grade science scores have been a reliable strength, meeting or exceeding district and state averages for four consecutive years, which points to a strong science curriculum.
