Summary

Walter C. Young Middle School in Pembroke Pines, FL, is a public school serving 691 students in grades 6-8, part of the Broward County Public School District, and is situated in a competitive neighborhood with several high-performing nearby schools.

This school has a standout strength: it excels at preparing students for advanced high school coursework. In the most recent school year, an impressive 93% of students were proficient in Algebra 1, 100% in Geometry, and 97% in Biology 1—scores that rival top-tier schools like City/Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School and Somerset Academy Middle (Miramar Campus). However, the school shows a "two-tiered" academic profile. While its advanced students thrive, performance on grade-level FAST assessments is more moderate. For example, 8th-grade FAST Math proficiency (53%) falls below the state average (61%), and FAST ELA scores (65%) are solid but trail behind top local peers like City/Pembroke Pines Charter (91%) and Pioneer Middle School (72%). This suggests the general education population may need more support to match the success of the advanced track.

On the positive side, the school boasts a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 18%, significantly better than the district (33.6%) and state (31.4%) averages, and lower than many nearby schools like Pioneer Middle (26.1%) and New Renaissance Middle School (29.2%). The school also spends more per student ($14,033) than several higher-performing neighbors, such as City/Pembroke Pines Charter ($11,666) and Somerset Academy Miramar ($8,472), raising questions about how effectively those funds are used to boost overall academic outcomes. Overall, Walter C. Young is a solid, above-average school with a clear focus on advanced learners, but it has room to grow in supporting all students to reach their full potential.

Open Quote The leadership of this school is truly exceptional. Principal Henderson and everyone we have talked to so far have been very open and supportive. Similarly, the PTSA is active and creative. Academically, this school is an A-rated school in the district and has a lot to offer. They have the standard Cambridge program that nearly every school in the district now has. In my opinion, two academic programs really set this school apart, however. The little coders in the KnextGen Knights program not only love their classes but also rack up awards at every competition they go to. This academic year, the school has brought back the Dual Language Program, and it is most definitely not dual language in name only. It is rigorous. The best thing is that kids can be in either of these programs or in all of them. One is not a co-requisite to another. Finally, regarding the physical threats and bullying that some of the previous reviewers spoke about some years ago, those problems seemed to have been taken care of. We have not experienced anything of that sort this year. In addition, I have done my research and talked to parents who are a couple of years ahead of us before committing to this school, and they did not know of any violent behavior either. Overall, I recommend WCY without reservation! Close Quote
