Summary

Emma Jewel Charter Academy in Cocoa, FL, serves 339 students in grades K-8 within the Brevard school district, where 77% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a rate significantly higher than nearby high-performing schools like Lewis Carroll Elementary School (37%) and Ralph M Williams Junior Elementary School (39%). The school has historically ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Florida elementary schools, but recent data shows a slight uptick to the 11th percentile, earning a 1-star rating for the first time in several years, suggesting early signs of a potential turnaround.

A fascinating split in performance exists between the elementary and middle school grades. While 4th and 5th-grade proficiency in ELA and Math is very low (25-33%), and 5th-grade Science proficiency is just 13%, the middle school program is surprisingly strong. For example, 7th-grade Math proficiency is 65%, higher than the district average of 49%, and Algebra 1 EOC proficiency is an impressive 90% compared to the district's 61%. This suggests a highly effective middle school program, particularly in advanced subjects, though students often arrive from the elementary grades significantly behind. The school also has a high student-teacher ratio of 20.5:1, nearly double that of nearby Ralph M Williams Junior Elementary School (11.7:1), and a chronic absenteeism rate of 26.9%, which is higher than top-performing neighbors like Audubon Elementary School (16.5%).

Despite these challenges, there are encouraging trends. Year-over-year test score gains include 3rd Grade Math jumping from 28% to 63% and 6th Grade ELA rising from 43% to 65%. The school spends $12,994 per student, which is more than Lewis Carroll Elementary School ($11,099) but less than Audubon Elementary School ($14,695), indicating that spending alone doesn't predict success. The key to future improvement will be replicating the success of the middle school math program across all elementary grades while addressing high absenteeism and class sizes.

Open Quote I do love my childs teacher, but that is about all I like about this school.. My child has been asulted by "trained and educated" staff, suspended from school THREE TIME THIS YEAR!! He has NEVER been suspended before. they claim to be all for working with parents to come up with proper punishment for poor actions of the child however, they decided to keep my child in what is called the "Reflection room" for 2.5 hours.. Keep in mind, they are required to sit in a cubical style seat and be silent to "reflect" this length of time is crazy, ESPECIALLY to a child who has special needs due to ADHD and TDD. We are on susepension # 3 right now and searching for a new school due to him coming home from school with marks on both sides of his NECK!!! and his arm! I am through with this school, if you think this is the place for you, think again. Close Quote
