Summary

Hans Christian Andersen Elementary School is a public elementary school in Rockledge, Florida, serving 524 students in grades PK-6 and part of the Brevard District, which is ranked 23 out of 67 districts in the state.

The school faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates that have risen from 17.1% in 2020-2021 to 31.4% in 2023-2024, significantly higher than the district and state averages. Academically, the school's performance is generally below the district and state, with its 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency rate at 49% in 2024-2025, compared to 58% for the district and 57% for the state. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 55.34% to 61.15% over the past few years, indicating a higher proportion of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Tropical Elementary and Manatee Elementary, Hans Christian Andersen Elementary generally performs worse on academic measures. However, the high chronic absenteeism rate is a concern shared by many of the nearby schools, suggesting a broader issue within the district or region that needs to be addressed. Despite the higher per-student spending at Hans Christian Andersen Elementary compared to the state average, the school's academic performance lags behind many of the nearby schools, indicating that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to improving student outcomes.

Open Quote If you have any other options nearby, take them. This school is rough. The kids are loud, rambunctious, mean, rude...and then there are the teachers and staff. I dealt with 2 kindergarten teachers that were obviously over teaching and would rather hit the bottle every night and the school counselor couldn't care less about students or parents. Rude rude rude! And good luck getting a phone call returned. We left and will never return. My son is already less stressed and he's in a summer camp at a school down the street. Andersen was so loud and stressful. Ugh. So glad to be out of there! So unprofessional. Make the extra arrangements and take the extra time to drive to a school south of Andersen. You won't regret it. Close Quote
