Summary

Bradford Middle School in Starke, FL, serves 408 students in grades 7 and 8 and is part of the Bradford district, which ranks in the bottom third of Florida districts.

The most critical issue at Bradford Middle School is its extraordinarily high chronic absenteeism rate of 49.1% for the 2023-2024 school year, meaning nearly half of all students are chronically absent. This rate is 56% higher than the state average of 31.4% and nearly double that of nearby Lake Asbury Junior High School (25.7%). While Wilkinson Junior High School also has a high rate at 44.3%, Bradford's is still significantly worse. This absenteeism directly impacts academic performance, as it is nearly impossible for a school to achieve strong results when half of its students are not regularly attending class. Despite spending at or above the level of higher-performing schools—$12,691 per student in 2023-2024—Bradford is not translating that funding into comparable academic outcomes.

Academically, Bradford shows inconsistent performance. A bright spot is its Algebra 1 program, where students scored 79% proficient in 2025-2026, well above the state average of 63%. However, overall proficiency in core subjects is a concern. For example, 8th-grade math proficiency was just 39% in 2025-2026, dramatically lower than Lake Asbury's 82% and Wilkinson's 69%. Similarly, 8th-grade ELA proficiency was 47%, compared to 64% at both Lake Asbury and Wilkinson. The school also struggles in Civics (52% vs. state 77%) and 8th-grade Science (40% vs. state 52%). While there was a surprising strength in 7th-grade math (67% vs. state 53%) in 2025-2026, this does not carry over to 8th grade, suggesting a need for the school to investigate what worked for that specific cohort. Overall, Bradford's biggest challenge remains getting students to show up to class, which is the foundation for any academic improvement.
