Summary

Amity Middle School: Orange, a 7–8 grade middle school serving 380 students in Orange, CT, is part of Regional School District 05 and ranks 23rd of 258 Connecticut middle schools (91st percentile, 5 stars). Its academic proficiency is dramatically above state averages: 79.7% of 7th graders and 70.7% of 8th graders met ELA standards, while 73.5% of 7th graders and 67.4% of 8th graders met math standards, compared to statewide rates between 41.9% and 52.2%.

The performance gap between Amity and nearby schools is striking. In 7th grade ELA, Amity's 79.7% proficiency rate towers over Harborside Middle School (62.2%), East Shore Middle School (53.6%), Derby Middle School (38.5%), and Ansonia Middle School (27.3%). Even Amity's lowest math proficiency rate — 67.4% in 8th grade — is higher than the highest math rate at virtually every comparison school in the region. The closest competitors, Harborside and East Shore in Milford School District, rank 81st and 78th statewide, far behind Amity's #23. Shelton School District's Intermediate School and Harry M. Bailey Middle School trail by even wider margins.

Amity also stands out for its exceptionally low chronic absenteeism of 4.7%, versus 16.4% statewide and 11–27% at nearby schools like Harry M. Bailey Middle School (27.0%) and Derby Middle School (25.0%). The school posts strong results for students who often face extra challenges: special education students rank 4th of 27 schools statewide, and low-income students have ranked in the 85th–93rd percentile in recent years. While Amity benefits from an economically advantaged community and a top-tier district, its subgroup performance and five-star ratings in 9 of the last 10 years suggest school-level practices play an important role. The main trend to watch is a persistent score drop from 7th to 8th grade, plus a slight gap versus the district average.

Open Quote Excellent school for middle school - truly prepares children for High School. Close Quote

Open Quote Communication is really hard in this school. In the 7th grade there are two teams that are really inconsistent. Team X and Y. Team X teachers give students huge amount of homework, tests and projects. They give out "F" so easily as a grade even for papers that were supposed to be signed by parents, not a real homework!. And then don't give out any grades for some other real homework that are done properly and should get an A+! Specially team X science teacher does this consistently, discouraging students badly. It seems that students in this team are a lot more evaluated than team Y. Which is really inconsistent with Team Y and unfair. This school doesn't have a clear guideline for the teacher to provide the kids the same learning opportunities. Team X students are so busy doing so much work, they have no more time to do any exatra curriculum activities. But, Teach Y students have really NOT MUCH to do on a daily basis!
My child is overloaded and under tremendous pressure and already doesn't like science anymore, because of the discouraging behaviors of the science teacher! Close Quote
