Summary

Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School is a grades 6–8 public middle school in the coastal town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, serving 271 students as part of Regional School District 18, one of the highest-ranked districts in the state.

The school performs well above state averages in nearly every subject and grade level, placing 35th out of 258 Connecticut middle schools with a 4-star rating in 2025–2026. Its 8th grade science proficiency of 85.1% is especially notable — nearly 35 points above the statewide average and far ahead of nearby Clark Lane Middle School (62.8%), John Winthrop Middle School (54.0%), and Leonard J. Tyl Middle School (55.9%). The strength carries into 8th grade math, where the school posted 76.6% proficiency versus 59.7% at Old Saybrook Middle School and 56.3% at East Lyme Middle School. Interestingly, Old Saybrook and Westbrook Middle School post stronger 6th and 7th grade ELA and math scores, which suggests Lyme-Old Lyme's program may be especially effective at accelerating students by the end of middle school.

The school also stands out for attendance and resources. Chronic absenteeism was just 7.9% in 2025–2026 — less than half the statewide rate of 16.4% — and the school's free/reduced-price lunch rate of 18.45% is lower than most surrounding middle schools. Well-resourced, the school spends about $24,269 per student and maintains a 10.0 student-teacher ratio. That said, the statewide ranking has eased from the top 5% a few years ago to 35th place, and individual grades show some year-to-year swings — 6th grade math dipped to 43.5% in 2024–2025 before rebounding to 63.5% this year. The school historically posted strong results for special education and low-income students — 95th and 93rd percentiles for those subgroups in 2020–2021 — and remains comfortably in the top 15% of Connecticut middle schools.
