Summary

Northend Elementary School is a small K–5 school in New Britain, CT, serving 212 students, roughly 80% of whom qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. As part of the New Britain School District, it sits in one of Connecticut's lowest-ranked districts, and its overall academic performance is well below state averages. On the positive side, the school has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.2, lower than most nearby elementary schools. But with only about 30–40 students per grade, scores can fluctuate noticeably year to year.

Northend Elementary School ranked 448th out of 491 Connecticut elementary schools in 2025–2026, placing it in the middle-lower tier of its district: slightly above DiLoreto Elementary & Middle School, Jefferson Elementary School, and Smalley Elementary School, and just below Vance Elementary School. Lincoln Elementary School and Smith Elementary School post somewhat stronger results within New Britain. While proficiency rates are low in absolute terms, Northend is often in line with — and sometimes above — district averages, particularly in 3rd-grade math and 5th-grade science. The contrast with nearby schools in neighboring districts is dramatic: Mary E. Griswold School in the Berlin School District, just 1.35 miles away, reaches 60.8% math proficiency, and John Paterson School in the Newington School District, 2.3 miles away, reaches 60.3%, compared with 22.6% at Northend.

A standout strength is attendance: the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 21.8% is well below the New Britain School District average of 32.0%, though still above the state's 16.4%. The school has never recovered its ranking from 2012–2013, when it was in the 70th percentile, and outcomes for special education and low-income students remain concerning. For parents, Northend Elementary School offers a small environment with good staffing ratios and improving attendance, but the academic challenges are real and should be weighed carefully against the school's strengths.

Open Quote Northend Elementary School is the last community school in our district, is a small school only 315 students, that make this school very special because everybody know each other. This school have a good welcoming to parents, visitors and for their own staff. I hope more school have the same ambient that you can feel when you visit Northend. Also Northend have an excellent teachers. Teachers that not only educated ours children,Northend Schools have teachers that really care about them. This years that will may change when the superintendent of our district, DR. Doris Kurtz remove our principal and 50% of our staff in order to obtain/apply for a grant. This is very sad.
