West Woods School is an elementary school in Hamden, CT, serving 317 students in grades PK–6 within the Hamden School District, which ranks near the bottom of Connecticut districts overall. West Woods itself ranks 280th out of 491 elementary schools statewide, placing it in the 43rd percentile with a 2-star rating. That is meaningfully above the district's overall standing, but it marks a clear decline: the school ranked in the top quarter of Connecticut elementary schools as recently as 2017–2018. Today, West Woods is the second-strongest elementary school in Hamden — behind Spring Glen School but ahead of Bear Path School, Shepherd Glen School, and Dunbar Hill School.

Parents will find several bright spots at West Woods. Chronic absenteeism is a major one: just 11.8% of students are chronically absent, compared with 21.5% districtwide and 16.4% statewide. The school has cut that rate roughly in half since 2021–2022 and held it below 12% for three straight years. Older data also shows exceptional support for higher-need students — West Woods ranked in the top 5% of Connecticut schools for both low-income students and special education students in 2020–2021. The current 6th-grade cohort started slow in 3rd grade and improved steadily, so West Woods has shown it can develop students over time. However, with a poverty rate of 28.08% — similar to Spring Glen School — West Woods trails Spring Glen in nearly every tested grade and subject. It also spends generously at roughly $19,845 per student, more than nearby North Haven School District and Cheshire School District schools that post higher proficiency rates, while maintaining larger class sizes than most Hamden peers. Whether the current 3rd-grade cohort follows the same upward path will be key to knowing if this is a temporary dip or a longer-term trend.

Open classroom was considered a huge failure by 1975 when I went there. Teachers were bad then with half that were old farts who should have been retired and the new young ones out of college who knew nothing except how to get their hair and nails done. With all the huge salaries from tax money it's no wonder the system is failing. Close Quote

West Woods school is great. The teachers and the principal give every opportunity to students, encourage them especially I love their math tools in making the kid learn math in every possible way. My son went to kindergarten and now he is in first grade. I really like his class teachers and in general all the teachers are great and friendly. The Principal is a nice, pleasant lady, excellent leader, but one thing I have to say is she is not keen in to Hygienic issues. The kids are sent to recess to play outside and immediately they are sent to lunch with out washing hands. The principal does not enforce the rule that the kids need to wipe or wash their hands. With lot of illness and viruses going on an elementary school kids need to be enforced with hygienic rules and conditions. Close Quote

This school is a real gem that provides our children with great opportunities to learn and develop into strong students. The new principle gets things done! When an issue comes up she takes care of it. She is involved and so pleasant. The teachers and staff are friendly and really care. This school also brings the community together in a number of ways through the year. My son is only in first grade but I was pleasantly surprised how wonderful his kindergarten year was and now first grade year is. West woods Elementary school in Hamden is definitely a great place for our kids to get the elementary education. Close Quote
