Summary

University of Hartford Magnet School is a regional magnet elementary school in West Hartford, CT, serving 477 students in grades PK–5 as part of the Capitol Region Education Council. The school occupies a unique middle ground: it ranks in the 29th percentile statewide (351 of 491 elementary schools), well above most Hartford School District schools but far below the high-performing West Hartford schools just a mile or two away. Its student body reflects this regional magnet mission, with 62% of students qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch, compared to just 13–17% at Aiken School and Morley School.

The school spends more per student than any nearby school — $22,853 versus roughly $16,000–$18,000 at neighboring schools — yet academic results do not match that investment. Math and ELA proficiency rates run 9 to 21 points below state averages, with 4th grade showing the weakest results. The clearest bright spot is 5th grade science, where 50% of students meet proficiency, nearly matching the state average of 52.9% and far exceeding the district average of 35.5%. Notably, STEM Magnet at Annie Fisher School, a nearby magnet serving a similar poverty level, ranks in the 47th percentile and posts substantially higher math scores, suggesting that a comparable student population can achieve stronger outcomes.

The school has made real progress on attendance, cutting chronic absenteeism from 31.8% in 2021–2022 to 19.5% today, though that remains above the state average of 16.4% and roughly three times the rate at Aiken School and Morley School. A more concerning pattern is the large gender gap: female students rank in the 19th percentile statewide for their subgroup, while male students rank in the bottom 3%. The school has stabilized after a decade-long decline from its 60th-percentile peak in 2016–2017, and its recent upward trend offers cautious optimism, but the school still has significant work ahead to serve all of its students well.

Open Quote Our son has been attending this school for the past four years. What the school did for our son is nothing short of a miracle. Before UHMS, he was going from school to school looking for the right one for him. We finally found him a home at UHMS. The school was an eye opener for us. They taught us that a school environment can make all the difference in a child's development. He was diagnosed with ADHD when he was very young. From the first day he started school, they took amazing care of him. As parents, we know how difficult it is to manage a child like my son. Every one at school was very patient and understanding. They worked very hard to bridge the gap so that he can be where he is today. My son is now excelling academically. We are so proud of him and we owe it to UHMS. We would like to thank Principal Tim Barber and the entire UHMS team for knowing and understanding my son the way they do. Their dedication is visible daily in the way they interact with each student. UHMS is a very respectful and compassionate environment. We also want to congratulate any parents who choose UHMS and the lucky students that get accepted to this exceptional academic institution. We find the staff in this school to be better than most private and public schools we’ve come across in the 58 years of combined academic career. Close Quote
