Summary

Bassick High School is a large comprehensive public high school in Bridgeport, Connecticut, serving about 1,075 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Bridgeport School District. The school serves an exceptionally high-need population—roughly 92% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, the highest rate among nearby high schools. Despite per-student spending ($15,453) comparable to or higher than its Bridgeport peers, Bassick's graduation rate of 64.7% is the lowest in the region, compared to 79.5% for the district and 91.2% statewide. Other local schools achieve far better results: Bridgeport Military Academy graduates 93.8% of students, Bullard-Havens Technical High School 99.0%, and The Bridge Academy 97.0%.

Chronic absenteeism is the school's most urgent challenge. More than half of Bassick students (50.5%) were chronically absent in 2025–2026, versus 31.3% district-wide and 16.4% statewide. Among nearby schools, only Warren Harding High School comes close at 46.1%; Fairfield Warde High School and Fairfield Ludlowe High School sit at 11.5% and 10.4%. Academic proficiency is also very low: 15.6% of students met ELA standards, 12.3% met math standards, and just 9.1% met science standards—all far below state averages.

There are bright spots worth noting. Bassick's African American students ranked in the 42nd percentile statewide, a major improvement from past years, and English language learners earned 3 or 4 stars in recent subgroup rankings. Test scores also rose in 2025–2026, though from a very low base. The most important takeaway from nearby schools: high poverty does not have to mean low graduation rates. The Bridge Academy (85.4% poverty, 97% graduation) and Bridgeport Military Academy (88.5% poverty, 93.8% graduation) serve similarly high-need students with dramatically better outcomes. Reducing chronic absenteeism and building on recent gains appear to be the most promising paths forward for Bassick.
