Summary:

Zip code 80602 in Thornton, CO is home to two public middle schools serving grades 6–8: Rocky Top Middle School and Rodger Quist Middle School. They are similar in size, with enrollments of 1,052 and 855 respectively, but belong to different districts—Adams 12 Five Star Schools and School District 27J—and show distinctly different academic profiles.

Rocky Top is the clear academic leader in the area. It ranks 126th out of 469 Colorado middle schools (top quarter), earns four state stars, and exceeds state averages in ELA, math, and science. In 2025–2026, its proficiency rates were 53.4% in ELA, 46.3% in math, and 44.4% in science, while its district averages were 42.3%, 35.5%, and 33.2%. Rodger Quist, meanwhile, ranks 233rd (50th percentile) and is below state averages, but it is improving quickly. In one year, ELA proficiency jumped from 32.3% to 40.3% and math from 24.2% to 30.1%, lifting its state percentile from the 35th to the 50th. Rodger Quist also has a higher poverty indicator (38.6% free/reduced lunch vs. 27.6% at Rocky Top), and both schools have nearly identical student-teacher ratios (18.4 vs. 18.5), so class size does not explain the gap.

Several patterns stand out. Rocky Top’s ELA is strong in 6th and 7th grade (58.1% and 59.4%) but drops sharply to 41.8% in 8th grade, barely matching the state average. Rodger Quist’s 8th-grade math (35.4%) is a bright spot, close to the state average of 37.8%. Both schools saw science proficiency decline this year—Rocky Top by 10.9 points and Rodger Quist by 5.1 points—even though the state average barely moved. Chronic absenteeism affects about one in four students at both schools (24.4% and 26.6%), which is better than their respective districts but still concerning. Overall, Rocky Top remains the anchor school, but Rodger Quist’s rapid improvement makes it one to watch.
