Summary

Graham Mesa Elementary School serves 424 students in grades PK through 5 in Rifle, Colorado, as part of the Garfield School District Re-2. The school currently ranks in the 19th percentile statewide, a steady decline from its position a decade ago when it ranked in the 46th percentile. The student body has also seen significant changes: the free-and-reduced lunch rate jumped from 35.3% in 2022–23 to 46.7% in 2024–25, and class sizes have grown, with the student-to-teacher ratio rising from 16.1 to 19.3 in just one year. Among nearby elementary schools, only Wamsley Elementary School has a higher ratio.

Academically, math is a clear area of concern. Only 21% of students at Graham Mesa Elementary School scored proficient or above on CMAS math in 2025–26, compared with 23.9% for the district and 37.3% statewide. Upper-grade numbers are especially worrying: just 16.4% of 5th graders met math expectations. By comparison, Kathryn Senor Elementary School (33.9%) and Cactus Valley Elementary School (31.7%) posted much stronger math results. English language arts tells a more complicated story. While 3rd grade ELA proficiency sits at just 9.8%, 4th graders reached 39.7%—actually above the district average of 30.6%—and 5th graders hit 27.4%. That dramatic swing suggests early literacy development is inconsistent.

Chronic absenteeism is perhaps the most urgent issue. The rate nearly doubled in one year, from 13.4% in 2023–24 to 30.5% in 2024–25, far above the district rate of 18.1%. Nearby Cactus Valley Elementary School keeps chronic absenteeism at just 10.1%, showing this is not inevitable. There are bright spots worth noting: Hispanic students at Graham Mesa Elementary School rank at the 37th percentile statewide relative to Hispanic students across Colorado, and low-income students rank at the 26th percentile. While the school's overall trajectory is concerning, these results—along with the strong 4th grade ELA performance—show that success is possible within the building.
