South Park Elementary School

South Park Elementary School is a small PK-5 school in Pueblo, CO, serving 273 students in Pueblo School District No. 60, where more than 8 in 10 students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school earned a 1-star state rating, ranking 750th out of 943 Colorado elementary schools, but that single rating tells only part of the story. South Park actually outperforms its district average in both English Language Arts and Mathematics — 29.6% proficiency in ELA versus the district's 27.2%, and 23.0% in math versus the district's 18.7%. The challenge is that Colorado state averages are much higher: 44.7% in ELA and 37.3% in math, so the school has significant ground to cover.

One of South Park's biggest strengths is attendance. The school's chronic absenteeism rate is just 27.2%, far better than the district's 41.6% and even slightly below the state's 28.4%. It also shows notably strong results with its Hispanic students, ranking in the 68th percentile statewide for that subgroup in 2024-25. In its immediate neighborhood, South Park outperforms Highland Park Elementary School and Beulah Heights Elementary School in both ELA and math, and it is well ahead of Pueblo Charter School for the Arts & Sciences by 18 points in ELA and nearly 20 in math.

The most concerning areas are science and upper-elementary math. Only 12.5% of South Park 5th graders scored proficient in science — well below the state's 36.1%. Math proficiency also drops sharply as students move up, from 29.2% in 3rd grade to just 18.4% in 4th grade. Perhaps the most instructive comparison is Minnequa Elementary School, which serves a similar high-poverty population yet achieves 55% ELA proficiency and 53.5% math proficiency. That gap of roughly 25 percentage points shows South Park's challenges are not simply a product of poverty. The foundation — strong attendance and effective work with Hispanic students — is in place, but the school has yet to translate those assets into consistently higher academic outcomes.
