Summary

Morton Elementary School is a mid-sized elementary school in Pueblo, Colorado, serving 374 students in grades PK-5 within Pueblo School District No. 60. The school serves a high-poverty community, with over 77% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Morton's state ranking has placed it in the bottom quartile of Colorado elementary schools in recent years, and both reading and math proficiency rates trail state averages by wide margins.

In English Language Arts, 23.4% of Morton students are proficient, compared to 27.2% for the district and 44.7% statewide. Math proficiency is 19.6% at Morton, versus 18.7% for the district and 37.3% statewide. These scores place Morton above some nearby schools like Bradford Elementary School (18.3% ELA) and Belmont Elementary School (22.2% ELA), but well below others such as Haaff Elementary School (43.8% ELA, 37.2% math) and Fountain International Magnet School (41.5% ELA, 36.9% math). The most glaring concern is 5th-grade math, where only 12.2% of Morton students are proficient, compared to 25.2% for the district and 39.3% statewide — a sharp drop from 21.6% proficiency in 4th grade.

Chronic absenteeism is also a challenge, with 40.7% of students missing enough school to be considered chronically absent. That's better than Park View Elementary School (49.4%) and Irving Elementary School (45.4%), but far above the state rate of 28.4%. Notably, several schools serving similar poverty levels achieve much stronger results: Franklin School of Innovation (85.6% free/reduced lunch) posts 40.6% ELA proficiency, and Haaff reaches 43.8%. Morton's student-teacher ratio of 17.0 is also higher than most area schools, and the school's data shows that certain groups, particularly girls, are achieving at much lower levels than their peers statewide. The success of comparable schools in the same district shows meaningful improvement is possible, and attendance, upper-grade math support, and targeted interventions are likely the highest-leverage priorities.
