South Valley Middle School is a small public school in Platteville, Colorado, serving 143 students in grades 6–8 as part of the Weld County Reorganized School District No. Re-1. The school is notably smaller than nearly every other middle school in the region—nearby schools range from roughly 250 to over 700 students—which allows for a very favorable student-teacher ratio of 10.9, the lowest among its regional peers.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges. In 2024–2025, only 25.5% of students were proficient in English Language Arts and 13.1% in math, well below state averages of 44.8% and 35.9%. Science proficiency (23.9%) is closer to the state average (36.4%) and is a relative bright spot. Perhaps the most telling comparison is to North Valley Middle School, which is in the same district and has a similar—actually higher—poverty rate, yet achieves substantially better results: 42.6% ELA proficiency and 22.0% math proficiency. This suggests South Valley's challenges aren't simply a matter of demographics or district policy, but likely reflect school-level factors. The school currently ranks in the bottom quartile of Colorado middle schools, at the 27th percentile.

There are some encouraging signs. Math proficiency more than doubled from the previous year's alarming 6.8% to 13.1%, and the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 28.0% is much better than several nearby high-poverty schools like Prairie Heights Middle School (45.7%) and Fort Lupton Middle School (38.2%). South Valley also outperforms Overland Trail Middle School, which has just 7.6% math proficiency. However, with such a small enrollment, results can swing significantly from year to year, and the school hasn't earned a two-star rating since 2017–2018. Parents should weigh the very small class sizes and recent signs of improvement against the persistently low test scores when considering this school.
