Summary

Mountain Sage Community School in Fort Collins, CO, is a small K-8 school serving 265 students in the Poudre School District R-1, one of the few schools in the area that spans both elementary and middle school grades. For the 2025–2026 school year, Mountain Sage ranks at the 50th percentile statewide, a mid-level performance that stands out because most nearby schools in the district perform much better. Surrounding schools like Kruse Elementary School, O'Dea Elementary School, and Riffenburgh Elementary School rank in the 80th–90th percentiles, while Linton Elementary School ranks lower at the 29th percentile.

One of the most notable patterns at Mountain Sage is the sharp difference between its elementary and middle school results. In 8th grade, students shine: 93.8% are proficient in English Language Arts, 68.8% in math, and 75% in science—all well above district averages. However, elementary grades tell a different story. Only 22.7% of 3rd graders and 28.6% of 5th graders are proficient in math, and 5th grade science proficiency is 33.3%. Overall math proficiency across all grades is 37.1%, compared to the district at 52.2%. English Language Arts is comparatively stronger at 54.3% proficient, still below the district's 60.1% but above the state's 44.7%.

Mountain Sage serves a more economically advantaged student body than most nearby schools, with 26% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, compared to rates of 50–67% at schools like Linton Elementary School, Harris Bilingual Elementary School, and Beattie Elementary School. Yet its overall math proficiency is below several of those same schools, suggesting that factors like the school's higher student–teacher ratio of 15.9:1 may play a role. Chronic absenteeism is a bit better than the district at 24.2%, though roughly one in four students is still chronically absent. Subgroup data shows that female and male students rank below their statewide peers, and the school's ranking has swung notably over the past decade. The bright spot is the middle school, which proves the school is capable of outstanding academic outcomes; the challenge is bringing that same success to the elementary years.

Open Quote Our daughter is in 3rd grade at Mountain Sage Community School and we are so happy that she gets to learn in such a special place! Mountain Sage has one of the only play-based Kindergartens in Fort Collins and the time they spend outside and in play, developing social-emotional skills, is invaluable. Academics are introduced when developmentally appropriate, not when the state deems it necessary, and yet all students are caught up or advanced by 3rd grade. The ability to learn when they're truly ready leads to a love of learning vs hating something they have to do before they're ready to. The arts and music curriculums are beautifully curated and go above and beyond any others I've seen locally. Their focus on sustainability (the children compost on-site from the start!) and their gardening program, including the incredible aquaponic geodesic dome on the playground, is one-of-a-kind. The staff is great, tuition is FREE, and they meet all state standards for learning. It's truly special! Close Quote

Open Quote We have been a part of the MSCS community for some time now, and even, no, especially after this crazy pandemic year, we remain happy to be a part of it. The depth of caring from the teachers is bar none and I have every confidence that next year, which will be a challenge for schools across the country, will be fantastic. We love it here. Open Quote Our family has been involved with various private and public Waldorf schools thru the years, and Mountain Sage is a great balance of Waldorf education and "the real world". The teachers care about the work they do, there is something special and meaningful about have the same teacher 1-5 and then 6-8th grade that provides deep connection. We are so grateful for this wonderful community. Close Quote

Open Quote Mountain Sage Community School has been a great place for our kids. The staff and the teachers have always been enthusiastic, supportive, well prepared, and have done a great job with our kids. We love the focus on the whole person, and the lack of focus in the early grades on electronics. The school emphasizes creativity and a love of learning. The teachers are always trying to find ways to improve either through mentoring with peers or summer training we hear about, and they always seem to bring this great energy. The fact that you can get a Waldorf-inspired education without the cost a typical private Waldorf school is amazing. Close Quote
