Summary

West Middle School is a small public middle school in Colorado Springs School District No. 11, serving just 119 students in grades 6–8 on the west side of Colorado Springs with a very low 10:1 student-teacher ratio. The school serves a high-poverty community, with 80.7% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch in 2024-25, up from 72.6% two years earlier.

Academically, West currently ranks in the 13th percentile of Colorado middle schools — 407th out of 469 — with a 1-star rating. Proficiency rates are well below district and state averages: only 21% of students are proficient in ELA and 16% in math, compared with 36.9% and 32.1% districtwide. Science proficiency is especially low at 8.5%, trailing nearby schools like Holmes Middle School (41.8%) and North Middle School (34.6%). West's ranking has fallen sharply from the 51st percentile in 2018-19, and its ELA proficiency dropped 16 points in one year — from 37.3% in 2022-23 to 18.7% in 2024-25 — a decline not mirrored at the district or state level.

The most pressing concern is attendance: 52.2% of West students were chronically absent in 2024-25, well above the state rate of 28.4%. With more than half of students missing significant school, even small classes can't ensure consistent learning. There are bright spots, however: the school reports a 0.0% dropout rate, and the 8th-grade cohort appears to be dragging down overall results — West's 7th-grade math proficiency (27.3%) actually met the district average. The school has also historically excelled with its Gifted and Talented students, who ranked in the 98th percentile statewide in 2017-18. Reducing chronic absenteeism and targeting support for the current 8th grade are likely the highest-leverage ways to improve both test scores and long-term outcomes.

Open Quote I attended this school while it was simply "West Middle School." This school offered a Space and Technology class which was always a favorite of the students. The teachers were really dedicated to making sure students never fell behind, and always made time to help any student that asked. Close Quote
