Prairie View High School is a large comprehensive high school in Henderson, Colorado, serving approximately 1,809 students in grades 9–12 as part of School District 27J, which ranks in the bottom third of Colorado districts. The school currently holds a 1-star state rating, placing it in the 17th percentile of Colorado high schools, and the share of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch has risen sharply in recent years to about 54%.

The most urgent concern is attendance: nearly half of all students (49.3%) were chronically absent in 2024–2025, roughly double the state average and far higher than nearby Brighton High School (37.7%), Riverdale Ridge High School (33.9%), and Horizon High School (32.2%). This attendance crisis is connected to other challenges. The graduation rate has fallen from 93.8% to 84.9% in just four years, now sitting below the state average and well below Brighton (93.1%), Riverdale Ridge (94.2%), and Horizon (96.8%). Reading and writing scores are stronger in earlier grades, and African American students at Prairie View ranked in the top tier of schools statewide in recent years, while English language learners also posted above-average results. Importantly, nearby Brighton High School serves a very similar student population yet graduates 93.1% of its students — a clear sign that outcome gaps can be closed. Prairie View's overall trajectory is concerning, but the success of neighboring schools in the same district demonstrates that improvement is achievable.
