Summary

Caprock Academy is a K–12 alternative public charter school in Grand Junction, CO, serving 871 students under the State Charter School Institute—making it the largest of the three comparison schools and offering a lower student-teacher ratio (13.9) than Ascent Classical Academy of Grand Junction (17.4) or Grand River Academy (14.9).

Caprock's strongest results are at the secondary level. The school posted 100% graduation rates for three consecutive years (2019–20 through 2021–22) and 91.3% in 2023–24, far above the Mesa County Valley School District No. 51 district rate of 78.3% and the state's 84.2%. Dropout rates have stayed near zero (0.7% in 2023–24). College-prep reading and writing scores are exceptional: 83% of 11th graders scored proficient on SAT Reading/Writing versus 65% districtwide and 60% statewide, and 9th and 10th grade PSAT scores were similarly strong. Science is another standout—11th grade CMAS science proficiency hit 45.8% in 2025–26, nearly double the state average. Caprock also outperforms Grand River Academy on nearly every metric, including graduation rate (91.3% vs. 44.2%) and chronic absenteeism (28.7% vs. 51.2%).

However, math and elementary grades remain challenges. All-grades CMAS math proficiency was 26.6% in 2025–26, below the state's 37.3%, and 4th grade math (14.3%) and ELA (22.1%) were well below state averages. Seventh-grade math and 5th–7th grade ELA, by contrast, met or exceeded state averages—suggesting a "two different schools" profile. Chronic absenteeism (28.7%) is close to the state rate and much better than Grand River Academy's, but lower elementary results may be a concern for parents of younger students. Overall, Caprock offers outstanding high school outcomes, especially in reading, writing, and science, with more inconsistency in early grades.

Open Quote This school has just suspended a young girl for supporting her classmate who has cancer. She shaved her head and was promptly suspended for violating school code. What a screwed up school! But what a shining example this young lady provided for her fellow classmates (one they will never forget), showing compassion and true support when a friend needs support. Now the example of compassion this administrator has shown her school is telling and is incapable of leadership. What a missed opportunity! I would not leave my kid in the care of this administrator, if I had a child attending this school. But I would first be protesting their removal. Close Quote
