Summary:
Elementary schools in zip code 93662 include seven schools in Selma Unified, all serving kindergarten through grade 6, with enrollments from 224 to 640. In 2025–2026, the schools’ average proficiency was below the state in all three subjects: 36% in English language arts (ELA), 30% in math and 18% in science, compared with state averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. The most important finding is that James Garfield Elementary was the one school above the state in all three subjects, while the other six were below it in each.
Garfield led the group with 53% proficiency in ELA, 62% in math and 41% in science—3, 23 and 5 percentage points above the state, respectively. At the other end, Terry Elementary had the lowest ELA and math results, at 23% and 15%; those results were 27 and 23 points below the state. Indianola Elementary had the lowest science result, 10%, or 26 points below the state. Andrew Jackson Elementary stood out in ELA at 45%, the group’s second-highest result, but was not as strong in math or science.
Recent results moved in different directions: the seven-school averages rose from 25% to 30% in math, fell from 37% to 36% in ELA, and fell from 23% to 18% in science between 2024–2025 and 2025–2026. Math’s gap with the state narrowed from 12 to 9 points, while the ELA and science gaps widened. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile for Garfield was 66, 75 and 74 across those three years; Terry’s was 4, 4 and 10. Contextual figures do not follow a simple pattern with results: in 2024–2025, the schools’ “Free/reduced lunch eligible” figures ranged from 87% at Indianola to 97% at Terry, while reported student-teacher ratios ranged from 20.8 at Woodrow Wilson Elementary to 24.5 at Terry.
