Summary:

Zip code 93646 includes five schools in Orange Cove, serving kindergarten through grade 12: three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, with 2,364 students across the area. All are part of Kings Canyon Joint Unified. The clearest concern for families comparing the elementary schools is that McCord Elementary trails its two K–5 peers, especially in math and science.

Sheridan Elementary and A. L. Conner Elementary are the elementary standouts overall. In 2025–2026, Sheridan had 50% proficiency in ELA, just ahead of Conner at 50% (50.3% versus 50.0%); Conner led in math at 51% and science at 38%. McCord scored 41% in ELA, 33% in math and 16% in science—about 9, 18 and 22 percentage points below the other two elementary schools’ average, respectively. Citrus Middle showed a strong grade-level contrast: its grade 6 ELA and math results were 3 and 8 points below state results, while grade 8 results were 13 and 14 points above. Orange Cove High also had a mixed profile, with grade 11 ELA and science 15 and 12 points above state results, but math only 2 points above.

Results generally improved from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, but McCord declined in all three subjects: 3 points in ELA, 1 in math and 8 in science. The elementary average rose 9 points in math, compared with 3 points each in ELA and science. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rankings rose for four schools from 2023–2024 to 2025–2026: Conner gained 14 points, Citrus 12, Orange Cove High 9 and Sheridan 8; McCord gained 1. The elementary schools reported student–teacher ratios of 22.0–23.6 in 2024–2025 and free/reduced lunch eligible shares of 95%–98% that year; these are context, not explanations for results.
