Summary:

ZIP code 91406 has 13 schools: six elementary schools, one middle school, five high schools, and one alternative K–12 school. For 2025–2026, the area’s average results were 47% in ELA, 35% in math, and 27% in science, all below the state’s 49%, 38%, and 36%. Three high schools—Birmingham Community Charter High, Magnolia Science Academy 2, and High Technical LA—have 2024–2025 results rather than 2025–2026 results in this data. The most important finding is that performance varies widely by school, while science is the area’s largest overall shortfall.

Several schools stand out, but strengths differ by subject. Daniel Pearl Journalism & Communications Magnet led ELA at 79%, 30 percentage points above the state, while Lemay Street Elementary led math at 51%, 12 points above. Stagg Street Elementary was above the state in all three subjects, scoring 56% in ELA, 50% in math, and 46% in science. At the low end, Bassett Street Elementary scored 30% in ELA and 10% in science—19 and 26 points below the state. Independence Continuation had the lowest math result, 0%, 38 points below the state, and scored 5% in science, 31 points below.

Across the ten schools with results in both years, ELA improved by 6 percentage points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, narrowing the gap with the state by 5 points; science rose 4 points and narrowed its gap by 1. Math rose by 1 point, but the gap widened by 1 point. Individual changes were mixed: Daniel Pearl’s ELA result rose 26 points and Cohasset Street Elementary’s rose 15, while Independence’s math result fell from 6% to 0%. The elementary schools’ reported measure is free/reduced lunch eligible, 2024–2025: Stagg was at 83%, Lemay at 92%, and Bassett at 96%, despite their differing results; student-teacher ratios ranged from 18.7 to 20.3. SchoolDigger percentiles also shifted: Cohasset rose from 26 to 47 and Lemay from 45 to 67, while Magnolia Science Academy 2 fell from 87 to 52.
