Summary:

Zip code 90802 has three Long Beach Unified elementary schools serving kindergarten through grade five: Stevenson Elementary, Edison Elementary and Chavez Elementary. Together they enroll 1,176 students. In 2025–2026, their average proficiency was 33% in ELA, 26% in math and 22% in science—about 16, 13 and 14 percentage points below California, respectively. The most important finding is that every school scored below the state in all three subjects.

Stevenson led the schools in all-grades results: 42% in ELA, 33% in math and 31% in science. Edison was lowest, at 22%, 16% and 12%, leaving a gap between the two schools of 20 percentage points in ELA, 16 in math and 20 in science. Chavez generally fell between them, but stood out in third-grade math: 41%, compared with 33% at Stevenson and 26% at Edison; it remained 6 points below the state. Stevenson also came close to the state in fifth-grade ELA, trailing by just 1 point.

Recent trends differ by subject and school. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, the group’s average rose by 2 points in ELA and 4 in science, but fell by 4 in math; science’s increase was driven chiefly by Stevenson, while math declined at all three schools. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rose from 40 to 45 for Stevenson and from 24 to 32 for Chavez over the supplied three years, while Edison’s fell from 15 to 8. Context measures offer no simple explanation for these differences: 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible figures were 88% at Stevenson, 90% at Edison and 74% at Chavez, while student-teacher ratios were 28.2, 24.3 and 19.5, respectively. These figures may help frame comparisons, but do not by themselves explain school results.
