Summary:
90744 has eight elementary schools in Wilmington, including three K–8 schools; all report 2025–26 proficiency results, and seven are in Los Angeles Unified while one is in a separate district. Results vary widely across the area, with school averages at about 40% in English language arts (ELA), 38% in math and 22% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%, respectively. Math is the area’s relative strength, while science is the clearest shared weakness: no school reaches the state science result.
Harry Bridges Span leads ELA with 57% proficient—8 points above the state and 20 points above the average of the other schools. Broad Avenue Elementary leads math at 50%, 11 points above the state and 13 points above the other schools’ average. At the lower end, Hawaiian Avenue Elementary has the lowest ELA result at 29%, 21 points below the state; Scholarship Prep - South Bay has the lowest math result at 24%, 15 points below the state. Gulf Avenue Elementary leads science at 29%, but remains 7 points below the state; Fries Avenue Elementary is lowest at 11%, 25 points below.
Average proficiency rose from 2024–25 to 2025–26 by 4 points in ELA, 6 in math and 2 in science; however, science gains lagged the state’s, widening the school-to-state gap by about 1 point. SchoolDigger statewide rankings improved at all eight schools over the same period, including Harry Bridges Span (54 to 64) and Broad Avenue Elementary (45 to 62). As context, free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25 were 85% at Broad Avenue, 91% at Harry Bridges and 97% at Hawaiian Avenue; these different results show that similar measures do not correspond to one uniform performance pattern. George De La Torre Junior Elementary reported 60% directly certified for free meals in 2024–25, a different measure. Ratios also do not point to a simple performance pattern: Fries had 18.0 students per teacher and the lowest science result, while Scholarship Prep had 24.7 and the lowest math result. These figures cover two years of proficiency results and should be treated as recent changes, not a long-term trend.
