Summary:

ZIP code 90278 has seven K–5 elementary schools, all in Redondo Beach Unified. In 2025–26, the schools’ average proficiency rates were 76% in English language arts (ELA), 76% in math and 67% in science, compared with state rates of 49%, 38% and 36%. Every school exceeded the state rate in all three subjects, but science results varied most across the local schools.

Alta Vista led in ELA and math, with 81% and 84% proficient; Birney led science at 83%. Tulita was also strong, placing second in math and science and third in ELA. At the lower end, Washington had the lowest ELA and math results, at 64% and 65%, and the second-lowest science result, at 51%; Madison was lowest in science at 45%. The gap between the highest- and lowest-scoring schools was 17 points in ELA, 19 in math and 39 in science.

Results changed unevenly from 2024–25: the seven-school average rose 2 points in ELA and 3 in science but fell 1 point in math. Alta Vista gained 7 points in ELA and 28 in science, while Madison’s science result fell 20 points. SchoolDigger’s rankings also tell different stories: from 2023–24 to 2025–26, Lincoln improved 305 places and Alta Vista 291, while Washington fell 386 places. Enrollment and student–teacher ratios do not map neatly to results: Birney had the highest listed ratio, 27.0, yet led science. For context, the free/reduced lunch eligible measure for 2024–25 ranged from 9% at Jefferson to 27% at Madison; these figures describe school differences, not their causes.
