Summary:

Schools in ZIP code 90221 include 14 elementary, middle, high and alternative schools enrolling 7,327 students, with school sizes ranging from 51 to 1,582. The results vary sharply across the area: the highest and lowest all-grades proficiency rates differ by 83 percentage points in English language arts (ELA), 74 in math and 72 in science. The most important finding is that students’ reported academic outcomes differ substantially depending on the school.

Early College Middle leads in all-grades ELA at 90%, while Foster Elementary leads in math at 77% and science at 73%. Foster’s results are also strong within its grades: in grade 5, 85% were proficient in ELA, 77% in math and 73% in science. At the other end, Cesar Chavez Continuation High had the lowest all-grades results—7% ELA, 3% math and 1% science. Its 11th-grade results were also below state results in all three subjects. Across the 13 schools with current results, equal-school averages were 54% in ELA and 44% in math, above state results by 5 and 6 percentage points; the 31% science average was 5 points below the state.

Results improved on average from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, but not at every school: among 12 schools with both years of results, average gains were 4 points in ELA, 5 in math and 6 in science. Foster rose 10, 14 and 22 points, respectively, while Compton Early College High fell 9, 17 and 22 points. Despite that decline, it reported 100% graduation and 1% chronic absenteeism; Thurgood Marshall improved but still had low results and 97% chronic absenteeism. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking rose for Foster, from the 60th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 93rd in 2025–2026, while Compton Early College High moved from the 95th to the 75th percentile. All schools reported free/reduced lunch eligibility for 2024–2025, ranging from 85% at Foster to 95% at Lifeline Education Charter; these figures are context, not an explanation of results. All-grades results combine different grade spans, so grade-matched comparisons are more useful when available.
