Summary:

Schools in ZIP code 90066 include 12 schools—7 elementary, 2 middle and 3 high schools—serving students from elementary through high school. Among the 9 schools with 2025–2026 results, the equal-weighted school averages were 56% in ELA, 49% in math and 43% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. Those averages mask a wide spread: the highest-to-lowest gaps were 68 points in ELA, 70 in math and 69 in science. The most important finding is that school results vary sharply across the area, so a ZIP-code-wide average does not describe what families will find at an individual school.

Mar Vista Elementary led all three subjects, with 84% in ELA, 80% in math and 79% in science—35, 42 and 43 points above the state, respectively. Short Avenue Elementary was the elementary runner-up, at 71% ELA, 69% math and 65% science. At the other end, Phoenix Continuation had the lowest results: 16% ELA, 11% math and 10% science, all below state levels. The two middle schools also differed substantially: Mark Twain Middle outscored Marina del Rey Middle by 23 points in ELA, 27 in math and 28 in science.

Recent changes are mixed: across nine schools with results in both years, average math rose about 5 points and science 4, while ELA edged down; individual schools moved in different directions. For example, Short Avenue science rose 13 points, while Beethoven Street Elementary fell 9 points; SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking for Short Avenue also climbed from 74 to 90 between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026. Income measures offer context, not an explanation: in 2024–2025, Mar Vista had 15% free/reduced lunch eligible and Short Avenue 29%; Mark Twain had 58%, compared with Marina’s 87%. Phoenix reported 53% directly certified for free meals that year, a different measure. School sizes and ratios do not form a simple performance pattern either: Marina’s 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio was 13.4, lower than Twain’s 19.0, despite its lower scores. The 2025–2026 scores cover nine schools; Ocean Charter and Goethe International Charter have only 2024–2025 results, and James J. McBride Special Education Center has no supplied test scores.
