Summary:

ZIP code 90022 has 21 schools—12 elementary, three middle and six high schools—covering elementary through high school, with specialized and continuation settings also represented. Across schools with 2025–2026 scores, unweighted averages were 45% in ELA, 35% in mathematics and 21% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%, respectively. The clearest area-wide concern is science: the average school result was 15 percentage points below the state, a wider gap than in ELA or mathematics.

Several schools stand out, but results differ sharply by subject. James A. Garfield Senior High led ELA at 66%, 17 points above the state; Morris K. Hamasaki Elementary led mathematics at 54%, 15 points above the state. Brooklyn Avenue led science at 37%, just ahead of Garfield’s 37% and about 1 point above the state. Brooklyn also beat Griffith Middle and KIPP Sol Academy in ELA and mathematics in each of grades 6, 7 and 8. At the lower end, Winter Gardens Elementary had the lowest reported ELA score, 24%, while Eastside High had the lowest mathematics score, 20%. Monterey Continuation reported 0% in science.

For the same 12 schools with scores in both years, average ELA rose 3 points and mathematics rose 4 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026; science rose only 1 point, while the state science result rose 3 points. Winter Gardens improved 7 points in ELA and 8 in mathematics, but its latest scores remained 25 and 16 points below the state. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking rose 15 points at Ford Boulevard Elementary and 16 at KIPP Sol over the listed years, while Eastside’s fell 37 points. The reported low-income measure is free/reduced lunch eligible (FRL), for 2024–2025: Brooklyn Avenue was 89% and Winter Gardens 90%, yet their results differed substantially—an observation, not an explanation of achievement.
