Summary

Weed Elementary is a public K-8 school serving 268 students in the rural community of Weed, California, within the Weed Union Elementary district, which ranks in the bottom 11% of districts statewide.

The school faces significant academic challenges, with student proficiency in English, Math, and Science far below state averages; for example, only about 20% of students are proficient in English and Math compared to nearly 50% and 37% statewide, respectively. A major concern is chronic absenteeism, with about one in three students missing a significant amount of school, a rate that has increased sharply in recent years. While the school spends over $24,600 per student, which is more than some neighbors like Grenada Elementary or Mt. Shasta Elementary, it has a higher student-teacher ratio and these resources have not yet translated into stronger academic outcomes.

Interesting comparisons can be made with nearby schools. Butteville Elementary, just over three miles away, ranks in the top 40% of schools with proficiency rates nearly triple those of Weed Elementary, while Little Shasta Elementary has an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 5.6%. This shows that better outcomes are being achieved in similar regional contexts, suggesting potential opportunities for learning and collaboration to address Weed Elementary's persistent struggles.

The staff! You would really think that this 8 year old boy ran this school, He is 8 all of you are licensed professionals! I really just want to know how he got his shoes off and layed down on the floor with his teacher watching. My son is no angel granted, but when the school invests thousands of dollars on yet another curriculum program for basic math, the same basic math they've been teaching for years, generations, instead of investing it into training their staff!!! Your teachers obviously need new techniques, not another program that teaches the same mathematics that people have been learning for ever! Its not the curriculum its how your staff delivers it. Lets face it, this school is a joke, and the only reason my son goes there is because it is the least of three evils for jokes of educational facilities in this county! No wonder over 63% of our kids don't feel confident enough to face the world and never leave Siskiyou County. My advice, If you' The staff! The principal and teachers here have absolutely no common sense, lets suspend a student for 3 days on Monday, but then not count Monday, the problem is obvious even the "leader" doesn't know how to do basic math, no wonder they wasted my hard earned money it. And then when he does go back on a Thursday go ahead and crush his spirit again b/c you can't count. Yeah that sends a message alright, you don't want him there. Well guess what If I had a choice he wouldn't be. Close Quote
